The People
Hamada Vineyard is a family-run operation and the newest entrant in Mikasa's quietly growing wine scene. Hirofumi and Kyoko Hamada, both medical doctors by profession, turned to wine in their later years with help from their son Leo.
The Land
When we were in Mikasa, we couldn't help but be reminded of the Windows XP default wallpaper - picturesque rolling hills as far as the eye could see and a constant, gentle breeze blew across the land. Compared to the more famous Yoichi, Mikasa is further inland, which leads to large differences in day and nighttime temperatures. Because of this, the wines here have a freshness not always found even in Hokkaido, and long sunshine hours produce wines with ripeness you wouldn't typically expect from the region.
The Wine
The Hamadas' wines are pristine and precise as you'd expect from their background in a scientific field. Yet, each wine is expressive, intentional, and an evolution of Mikasa's fast-emerging style.
From their fresh and table-friendly Bacchus to the serious and dense Chardonnay, each wine conveys a different aspect of the region's outstanding terroir.
